it seems that the power steering isn't working but my mechanic says its fine,
If you think it's not working, it's not working. Everyone knows what a car should feel like when driving it. Sounds like you need a new mechanic.
if you know of any similar issues, please let me know how to repair this or what to expect
Stiff Steering it a symptom of a bad FEM- https://forums.fordthunderbirdforum...ectronic-module-fem-2002-2005.5560/post-35306

A qualified mechanic can verify if this is your problem.

many problems come and go . Driver's window wouldn't go up for 4 days, suddenly it closed. Wind shield wipers operate in pulse mode or not at all. Every day is an adventure.

Windshield wipers work whenever they feel like it. Can start the car, no wipers, no fluid jets -- then after driving for five minutes, both suddenly start working. Worked with the shop on this for a while, they were stumped, ruled out anything to do with the motor. Their best guess was an electrical problem with the wiper switch, they recommended disassembling and replacing the part of the steering column the wiper switch is attached to (forget what they called it).

Does anyone have advice/experience with either of these problems?

Left window does not go up or down with door opening and wiper control is two notches off. Have reprogramed with left window and checked all computer connections. Will work fine for a day or so and the wipers cycle when engine starts and window does not go down to open or close the door.

checking the ABS / Speed sensor module is also recommended when stumped. My mechanic found that it was affecting many things related to speed sensors including speedometer, power steering and throttle control. Had it rebuilt and car runs sooo good.

My lights are not working on my shifter. Any suggestions?

Hello
Occasionally my top does not work..when it doesn't work it also affects my driver's window. I turn ignition on and off open close door..let it sit awhile and it works fine. Will work great till it decides to do it again..if I close my door and the window drops or raises I know my top will work.
Any ideas?

Looking for some help troubleshooting the dash lights on my ’02 Thunderbird.

Symptoms:

  • Gauges (speedo, tach, fuel, temp) all work normally.
  • Odometer/PRNDL display lights up and dims with the dimmer wheel. (I believe this to be true, but I am going to re-confirm)
  • None of the gauge face backlights work when headlights are on.
What I’ve checked so far:

  • Pulled and tested fuse #33 (10A, FEM Illumination Module) → good.
  • Checked fuse #13 (Cluster) → good (and cluster still functions, so no surprise).
  • Park/headlights work fine. (I believe this to be true, but I am going to re-confirm)
  • Recently replaced the brake pedal switch; I believe the backlighting was working right after reassembly, but can’t say with 100% certainty.

If you have any recommendations on what to check next, any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

I’m not sure whether anybody else has experienced this problem but even in the Thunderbird manual I cannot find any reference as to how to remove the auxiliary junction box that is an obstruction to removing the FEM. The manual suggests there are two nuts that need to be removed. I’m not sure whether they are underneath a cover, but I can’t find them any help would be greatly appreciated.

The removal instructions are on post #1-

There are two 10mm nuts that hold the connector box in place.

Thanks Doug, I had removed the two nuts and swung the junction box as far away as I could but still couldn’t clear the bottom right tab on the FEM. I was literally trying to pry the box aside so much that I thought I would break something and still couldn’t get it "aside" far enough. Alternatively, I am attempting to remove the unit with the connectors on the left side of the FEM and covers the upper left tab of the FEM (the one that serves no purpose). The unit is supposedly just clipped to a metal bracket underneath. Hopefully with that removed, I can finally extract the FEM. Thanks for your help though

I have removed many of these modules and if you don't pull the module straight out sometimes it gets caught on the two mounting studs. Here is a really good video which has step by instructions on how to remove the FEM.
