Has anyone else encountered a delayed /hard shift from 1st to 2nd?

I just bought an 02 and when I have my foot to the floor...there is a hesitation and hard shift...if you find out what it is please let me know.thx threebird
 
Although I have not experienced a hard shift from from 1st to 2nd, I might expect it under hard acceleration. I would only expect a delay and hard shift when it downshifts under hard acceleration - like an aggressive merge off a ramp when required. (or just for fun!)

It seems that most shifting issues are due to the trans fluid is low (or too high) or, too hot. Unfortunately, with this trans, with no dipstick, you can't check the level (not easily) or smell the fluid to see if it is burnt. (Seriously -who thought no dipstick was a good idea.)

To Threebird: you can search and find other threads here about how this transmission "learns" the driver's habits as you drive (heavy foot or light foot; gentle or mental; etc.), and how if you disconnect or change your battery it forgets everything and has to relearn your driving style.
 
I had this problem of shifting at around 50K miles on my 05. The result had nothing to do with the fluid. Instead the shifting which would either be very hard often between 2nd to 3rd or as time went on between 1st to 2nd or sometimes no shift at all. The tach would increase in rpms but no shift would occur.
The fix was removal of the transmission to access the fragments of one of the solenoids used to shift, then reassemble & install. Expensive!
 
I had a similar problem. Ford dealership replaced a transmission computer chip (yes, they have a computer chip at least that is what I was told) and that fixed my issue.

This is not necessarily your problem. It can be other things as well.

Did you disconnect or replace your battery recently?

Transmission up shifting is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module. The PCM receives inputs from various engine or vehicle sensors and driver demands to control shift scheduling, shift feel and Torque Converter Clutch operation.

The PCM has an adaptive learn strategy to electronically control the transmission which will automatically adjust the shift feel. When the battery has been disconnected, or a new battery installed, certain transmission operating parameters may be lost. The PCM must relearn these parameters. During this learning process you may experience slightly firm shifts, delayed, or early shifts. This operation is considered normal and will not affect the function of the transmission. Normal operation will return once these parameters are stored by the PCM.

Can you tell me about the TCM vs the PSM or ECM? Can I get a rebuilt TCM?
What other things do you suggest it could be?

If the upshifting issue is the PCM, use the link above to buy a replacement. They are also programmed with the latest software that addresses other shifting issues. I'm not aware of anyone that rebuilds them, just rebuilds for the FEM.

What the P0733 code means

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0733 code?
The first thing a mechanic is likely to do when diagnosing a P0733 code would be to check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If the transmission fluid is low or dirty, this could be the first sign of the problem, and the fluid should be replaced or topped off as necessary.

If the fluid level and condition are acceptable, the next thing the mechanic may do is perform a test drive to confirm the customer’s symptoms. have you changed your Tranny fluid and filter?

I have had success with Lucas Trans Fix additive.
Would love to hear more on this. I just got my fluid changed and it still does some shift flares and hard manual shifts after the fluid is warmed up. Did you drain out and pump in Lucas?

Yes. I had to have a refurbished PCM installed because of the wrench icon. Ever since, very hard shift from 1st to 2nd. I have a good mechanic (I think) and my 2003 runs great except for that. I'm just learning to live with it. If I let up on the gas right before the shift, it's a smoother transition.

Hoping this is the clue I need. 2004 PCR hard shifting into reverse. What state are you in and is there any chance you have the part info for that chip on a receipt from the repair?
