I saw the following information elsewhere and thought I would pass it on, in case others have a pinging issue with their engines.
"Since I bought my 2005 Bird, I've had engine ping when accelerating in 5th gear. I've tried various brands of gas. Some are better than others, but none completely eliminated the ping. (I can only get 91 octane, not 93.)
Today, I took it to the dealer to let them have a look. They found a marginal air flow sensor (the air-fuel mixture was running too lean), and they did a flash update. (There have been several software updates issued for this car.)
From what I can tell, the ping is gone or at least a lot better. I also notice a smoother shift, but maybe a bit less performance / power."
I hope this helps others🙂
