2005 ford thunderbird can a faulty cooler control valve cause the check engine and wrench lights to go on? My TBird started blowing really HOT air from the a/c and even if no a/c only vent still really HOT air.
Been driving with windows open until I could get to a mechanic.
After a few days, the check engine light and wrench light came on.
Are these related?
Or separate problems?

I read that
Yes, a faulty cooler control valve could cause both the check engine light and the wrench light to come on in a Ford vehicle:

Wrench light: This light indicates a problem with the vehicle's powertrain or four-wheel-drive system. It can be caused by a number of issues, including a faulty throttle body, transmission issues, failed sensors, or low battery voltage.

Check engine light: This light warns of issues with the engine or exhaust system.

If anyone has any knowledge of this, please advise asap. Thanks

Does your a/c work ? Have you had your mechanic check it out?
Every year he fills it with coolant and it works most of the summer (not working either side now) then totally blows hot. Sometimes it worked perfectly (both sides), other times I had to crack a window to make the right side blow cold. It was awful when I had to go to Central Valley this summer for work and it was 115 outside. yes, to replace is $2k. Assuming it's a leak and I've given him all info from this forum...

I recently paid my mechanic $2K to fix my a/c. Then started getting reall hot air, took it back, then they got Check Engine light and Wrench light. But it seems to be related. More money for diagnosis!

I hear ya'. I already spent $2K and its worse now!

Just got the results from the mechanic. Codes in pcm identify an issue with the dual heater control valve. Requires replacing to enable proper operation of the air conditioning system. Pressures are right where they should be in the a/c system. I suppose I will have to follow their advice.

Have not found any solutions here or on any other threads, only many frustrated and confused fellow owners.
Would really appreciate any advice if your Bird has been similarly diagnosed. Do not want to spend more money and not have this fixed.

So he wants to replace the dual heater control valve. Is that the same as the CCV, DCCV, and Heater Control Valve? Are they all the same part?

Marianne, please find yourself another mechanic! It does not cost 2k to fix an A/C system, or to replace the condenser. He is robbing you. The HVAC control valve costs less than $150.00 and is not that hard of a part to replace. It is a very common problem with this car an$ I have had to replace on both of my cars.

Same here Marianne,
I had the issue of full time hot air and replacing the dual heater control valve fixed it. Note, be sure it is the OEM part. My first replacement by a less reputable shop was an aftermarket knock off and it failed just over a year later. Thanks to the auto shop parts/ labor warranty I had the fix at no cost. This one is a Bosch and is what was originally installed on the engine, the original had made it 125,000 miles and that replacement didn’t go for but 12,000 miles or so. The cost of this last replacement was around $450.00 for analysis, parts and labor. As to the cost of an AC system replacement… compressor, clutch, condenser, and all the associated parts and pieces is about 3K at a good shop. I know, just had all that done and now it’s new again blowing ice cubes.

Thanks for the info. I had the same, heater control valve was bad. 58K miles. Here in Florida it cost $600 for the diagnosis, part and labor. Only a month ago it was the ac compressor, condenser and other components. Cost me $2K. I must check the part they gave me. Will let you know. I do not want to go broke owning this car. But in South Florida we need our AC. Thanks again.

Hey, the car is worth it if simply the joy in driving it. Many small and quite affordable things can be done to this car making it a viable sports car. I’ve done the simple add ons as upgraded suspension, brakes and rotors, a K&N cold intake, Borla exhaust system and a performance chip. The chip, intake and exhaust setup got me another 4 mpg and added 50 horsepower. The car was great before and now it’s even more a pleasure.I do this because it’s a keeper and well worth what it may cost to maintain.
