I recently pulled my stock unit out for the purpose of bench testing it. Everything works, I did have to replace the 8-track drive belt (FRM 12.1). Fortunately in my younger years I used to repair small audio equipment and I bought the belt on a hunch ahead of time. I still need to lube the 8-Track mechanism as it is a bit stiff but with a good push the 8-Track tapes engage and play.

I have found a couple of places online that will modernize your old radios with new tuners and even USB and/or Bluetooth. They can do this and keep the 8-track functional as well as maintain the look and feel of the original unit.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of upfit? It is pricey, in the neighborhood of $500-600.

Thanks,
