I am having a problem with my 2002 slipping. After driving the car over 30 minutes and at the speed between 45 and 60 mph, the rpms rev to about 4 and the car wont catch in gear. I pull to side of road and sit 10 to 20 minutes and it then runs fine? Mechanic is stumped. Anyone have an idea what is wrong?

"Transmission 2002" could mean anything. I revised for you.

Find a new mechanic, you have a transmission problem.

Go to a highly recommend transmission service. Your transmission needs service regardless of the miles are on the car.
Goggle Ford TSB 9-12-12.
YOU got troubles.

If you plan to go to a dealer for service, you might be better off at a Lincoln dealer. Most agree they seem to know our T-birds better than the Ford dealers (your results may vary).

Slipping can mean many things but the first is a lack of oil, as its a sealed unit you would need to find either a lincoln dealership that has knowledge of the LS models or a transmission specialist who knows about these as they were also used in the Jaguars of the period.

But as an extra point have you got any oil leaks, things that can go are connectors for the transmission where it goes to cool down, check all this first. If no leak then seek a specialist out. Even I know my limitations and transmissions are it.

This happened to my '94 and no one knew what to do until I got on a forum like this one. The answer was a sensor that was reading the speed incorrectly. Easy, cheap fix. May not be relevant to the retro Birds but figured I'd mention it. Good luck!
