I am new to the forum. I have a 2003, bought new, with 22,000 miles and I now have a growling noise that I believe is coming from the transmission. I checked for an exhaust leak and found none. The noise is not from the engine but the noise is present when I start the car and in forward and reverse. The noise becomes louder when under accleration. Any Ideas? Thanks..

Growling Noise

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I had the same problem with my 03 at 21,000 miles. The rear wheel bearings were replaced and that fixed the problem. I hope you have an exteded waranty as this repair is expensive. Let us know what the service shop says.

Best of Luck,

Jim (jetbird)

If it's what Jetbird says, maybe you can jack up the rear and see if you can hear anything before you go to the shop. Sometimes they repair by the process of elinmination - Or you may have a good mechanic
If it's a whineing noise, do a search above on "whineing noise" and you may find some tranny fixers

Please conserve vowels in "whineing" as we are now having a shortage of them. They ain't making any more either.

Thanks for the response. I do not think it is the rear wheel bearings since I can hear the noise when the car is not moving. I put the car up on my lift and the noise seems to be coming from the trans area. I will do a search on whining noise and see what comes up. Thanks.

Hi jktbird:
I'll copy some notes from others for your reference, to attempt to help:
This guy said: I have an '02 Bird with 44,000 miles. Just had it serviced, including a transmission flush. On a trip about 500 miles from home. I noticed a slight whining sound when it just starts up. In any event, when I rev it up a bit, the pitch of the whine goes up with the revs. In actual driving, I don't notice any problems."
His final solution: "The dealer replaced the solenoid body, filter, and fluid in the transmission, and the noise is gone. The transmission was about the last thing I would have suspected. It was covered under the extended warranty (total-$515), minus the $50 deductible. Unfortunately, I paid $135 two weeks prior for a transmission flush. I can't complain though, as this is my first problem in 6 years of ownership."
I searched on site and other "whines" were from the rear end. Anyway, maybe the above may give you a lead. I would also guess that you may be out of warranty as well. Keep us posted please.
