Thunderbird Year

Recently, while looking for a Flairbird, found a 1960 Covert that maybe a interesting.
Own a 61 and a 56 but No experience with this year and would appreciate any guidance on issues.
btw still in the hunt for a 64-66, very nice driver HT or convert but probably needs to have ac.

Hello from Nashville TN
I am interested in a nice 65 with functioning air conditioning. Where can the car be seen? If it is with in 500 miles of Nashville I could be a cash buyer for a clear title and immediate possession.
Probably have fininshed my last restoration and have been decided that I would rather pay more up front fopr fewer isssue to address. The 61 recently bought eventually required leaf springs, power steering ram, carb, brakes but the top system did work well and the paint was nice.

Hello Jim,
From the pictures, Your garage makes mine look tidy. Really like the Fairlane and the red Bullet bird. I am guessing then car is in Florida? Triple black looks clean and the chrome shows well. Might need to build a trip south to see before I could make an an offer.
Can you send an pictures of the underside ( rust), engine and interior.
Do all the electrics work ( well maybe not the clock) turn signals, seat, windows?
Also a pic of the mfg data plate. Believe a guy in Texas tried to sell me a 59 convert but the data plate shows at least the front half left the factory as a coup...didnt mention the hybrid until I asked.
Hope to hear from you.

Phil,
Sure thing. I can send more pictures and I have a complete file on this car. It has quite a story to it. It is an original black car and the interior was burgundy but was changed to black and done very well. Everything was changed, seats, carpets, headliner was sprayed but I have a new headliner for it not put in yet. New door panels that look amazing. The girl who had it spent well over $10,000 in parts and another $8000 in labor charges so she could show the car about 10 years ago. With the cost of the car and all these receipts I added up over $21,000 spent. And all of these expenses are documented with receipts. Not counting what I have spent on the car which is a few thousand more. I have all of the receipts. Some chrome has shown pitting so I had to replace small things, mirrors, trim etc. Bumpers look great. There is a little pitting on the rear bumper. Mechanically the car drives beautiful. I had to re-do several things like completely rebuild the air conditioning system. I had help from Classic Auto Air Tampa. New clutch, brushes, new York compressor, expansion valve, vacuum hoses etc. Gets pretty cold in there now. Also I have restored dash to like new condition. Everything works. This car even has a remote trunk release and vacuum door locks that work. Power vent windows as well as power windows work. All of the window motors were replaced before I got the car and is shown in the pile of receipts. And all of the safety convenience panel on the dash works, such as Flashers, door ajar light, vacuum door locks. I have the correct sending unit for the low fuel light but it has not been installed. It has a special thermistor attached to it that signals when the fuel is low and turns on the light on the safety convenience dash panel. It’s brand new though. Only thing that doesn’t work is the cruise control which was a rare option for 65. Suspension has been Rebuilt with new brakes tires ball joints leaf springs etc. The main issue of this car which does not affect its performance one bit is that the front floors need to be replaced. I have a (body Man) that can do it and the floor panels are available but he is backed up and probably won’t get done before I sell it. The back floors are nice. There is some rust in other areas but it’s minor to the function of the car. Frame rails and chassis look very solid. Quarter panels, doors, and general body are straight, only minor rust in bottom of outer door skin. Paint looks good and details very nice for cruise ins and local shows. The engine shows 91,000 miles which we think is original and the engine has had a valve job about 10 years ago. Runs beautiful starts right up and all the mechanicals have been maintained, carburetor rebuilt, pertronic electronic ignition is new, and transmission was rebuilt several years before I got The car. Shifts nice and quiet. The correct data plate is on the car and I Drive this car a lot. Not quite an everyday driver as I have four Thunderbird’s and five other classics, but it is very reliable and would drive anywhere. This is a hobby for me and I love the birds. I have been collecting and working on Thunderbird‘s since the early 80s. I think I’ve made every repair to a Thunderbird that can be done at sometime in that history. When I get to the warehouse today I’ll take more pictures and send them along. If you’re looking for a nice driver car this could be the one. Thanks for your interest. Jim

By the way, the clock does work. I can show you the trick on how to fix those. Usually Quite easily done. Jim

Hello Jim,
Feel free to contact me at my email address pwtrusty@*********

Maybe I can save us some time before you invest further. Your car has a remarkable history. Most Flairbirds have no back story at all. From your notes there is at least $25k in vested and a few thousand more some minor things and the floor pans. You did not mention a price but I would guess you need at least 27k. I have been dabbling in the classic third market for a little over a year and 27k+ that is the higher end for a hardtop. Not saying the car is not worth he price, but I have at least two others that are attractive both under 25 and no rust panels , that I know of, to address.
Also ,again just guessing , the car is in Florida which means I need to travel at least two days or pay an indie inspector, then add a transporter , about $1,200 to ,$1500 to acquire your car.
So we have a nice car, into top of my budget, that is relatively expensive to buy add some time in the body shop for the rust mitigation.
If I am badly in error let me know, but I am probably not a good match for your car.
Good luck with the sale

Well thank you for your honesty and For being upfront with me. I got into this car a few years back very inexpensively because the girl who owned it wanted to Move on to a corvette. I traded her a nice 1989 C-4 Corvette. I was in the Corvette very cheap so I made out good. If you would like a car like this that does need some rust repair underneath which is typical I believe for most cars like this, and it does need some cosmetic attention to the paint and minor interior work, like the new headliner I gave For it, I would Sell it to you for $12,000. I have three other birds and five other cars that I work on as a hobby. This is a great driver and would give you plenty of financial room to make it what you would like. I can guarantee you that it runs beautiful and I would trust driving this car most anywhere. I also have some contacts for shipping if that is something you would want to investigate. I shipped a car from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale for $600. Just a thought Jim

Sorry, headliner that I have for the car.

Thanks for the response, it seems rare to met an honest , adult in the car hobby. Your were correct, I did mention buying and quickly selling a '59 that had been , shall I say, inaccurately described. I bought expecting an inspection that did not happen. Sometimes you take your chances and but for the most part, I enjoy the car community.
Phil
