The long story is, my Dad brought her home brand new. His new baby. I have always helped him maintain her but no one was ever allowed to drive her.
Sadly not to long ago she became mine as he has now passed. Now I am on a quest to keep her pristine and in the family atleast untill my kids become her new owner.

By the way, I noticed that the two digits between the A and the Y change. It looks like the second digit is the year, but what does the first digit indicate (I often see a 6,7.8 or 9)?

The first number right after the A is the "Check Digit" This number is a computed from all the other digits and serves to validate the VIN.

You can probably find how exactly this is computed somewhere on the internet using search in Google or BING.
