I recently had need to use the spare tire but found it new in the trunk with a HUGE spot where the tread had separated leaving the wires sticking out. I have taken it to two dealers, Discount Tire, Firestone, and everyone says this tire cannot be replaced. There isn't even a tire that will fit the rim! The only suggestion I've gotten is to go to a salvage lot and find a used one. That's not acceptable. Anyone else had this problem?

I have a 2003 Bird with a spare as found on car. Replaced the donut with Original wheel & tire. WAS HARD FIT but the trunk cover only stays up about an inch. Have 5 Orig wheels & tires.

Thanks
Dennis

Thanks MIDAS

Wonder what would happen if we get an original wheel and tire, let the air out so it would fit better, and carry one of those air cans to fill it if needed....

I tried that. The factory wheels are wide by about 2-3 inches than the donut.Only problem with my solution would be the effort getting the original tire out as quick as needed to change a flat. Would I do it again---NO--- expense of tire $200+- and wheel used $50+-.

Do you think there's danger of rotting another spare - possibly by the battery?

If battery acid or emissions can rot it or affect the rubber, check to see if the exhaust tube for the battery is vented outside of the body. Some have reported that the tube was not all the way out. Just a thought - Harry, can you help me here?? Could this affect it??
