2004 Battery Jump Start/ Trickle charge instructions

the book says not to connect directly to the battery on a negative side if you're going to jump start it but you can connect it to the negative side of the battery if you're going to charge it or trickle charge it is that correct

Yes that is correct. When jump starting with cables from another vehicle, for safety reasons, the final negative connection of the four cable ends should be away from the battery onto some other parts of the car (frame, engine, body, etc...) to avoid sparks at the battery when the last connection is made. Batteries produce Hydrogen gas that is highly flammable. Making the connection directly to the battery has a risk of explosion from the Hydrogen gas. When connecting a charger, connect the cables to the battery before turning on or plugging in the charger to it's power supply. Same caution is used when disconcerting the cables.
