My 02 will not shift to D4. Anyone had this issue? The transmission is fine otherwise.
I had issues with my 2004 last year. Turned out to be the 2-5 servo. Sounds like you may have an issue with the 1-4 servo. Codes will verify what the concern is. If it is a servo, the transmission has to be dropped in order to access it, so it gets a little pricey. Same transmission in the Explorer, but servos are accessible without dropping the tranny. The price we pay to drive pretty cars.

Good luck.

I have the same problem, on accelerating it moves through all gears up to D5, but will not downshift using the gear shift lever. Ford Service Adviser said it was a microswitch. Don't know if that is true or not, runs fine otherwise.

Just saw your post. Does your transmission shift through all gears automatically? Are you saying, if you manually shift from D5 (overdrive) to D4--the transmission stays in D5? And, you can downshift manually, D3,D2 and D1?
If so--Your D5 (overdrive switch) is stuck and the transmission is not being told to manually leave D5 (overdrive).
The spring loaded switch is activated when you move your shift lever form left to right. It is located under the shift lever. To clean it--remove the console. Spray the switch with electrical cleaner and push switch in and out several times. This is not hard to do. Good luck.

I am having a problem with my 2002 slipping. After driving the car over 30 minutes and at the speed between 45 and 60 mph, the rpms rev to about 4 and the car wont catch in gear. I pull to side of road and sit 10 to 20 minutes and it then runs fine? Mechanic is stumped. Anyone have an idea what is wrong?

Goggle Ford TSB 09-12-12. Read it. Then consider taking car to a very good transmission shop. Mileage on car is not part of the problem, happens at any mileage.
