I've read the book and still am unsure how the driver's side fresh air control is supposed to work.

The knob is above the ignition switch. It does not pull out or go in, so I assume it must turn. If I force it, I can turn the knob but it turns and turns and turns...

I get the impression from the manual that it should turn.

Can anyone tell me how it's supposed to work?

Thanks

that knob pulls out. follow it to the vent door and disconnect it and see if you can pull the knob. If so, the door is frozen shut and you need to gently get it opened again. It also could be that the cable is rusted in the sheath after not being used. If so, use a little penetrating oil and let it work into the cable over a few days and try pulling on the knob

There is a nut on the inside of the dash that holds the cable to the dash. Unloosen all the way and then pull cable out. It goes through the same hole the wires come thru into the engine area.. You may have to remove the screws that hold the firewall retainer for the wires and cable to get it through.

When installing the new cable, once you have the cable through the dash a little, put on the nut. Then install the cble through the hole in the firewall.
