All of the early '50's Birds had the same problem. My '56 had scuffing as well as black rubber marks. However, back in the early days it seems that no one complained. Or, if they did it was between them and the dealers.
Today with the internet and people being a lot more vocal, everyone knows everything, so the auto guys get away with nothing.
 
True people use to be at the mercy of car dealers, Manufactures

While they are still putting it to ya, consumers don't have to
take being S****** as easily as before. With the internet
and consumer groups you at least have an opportunity to
try and get some problems taken care of.

Can remember the 1 year 12 month warranty, shoot they
would do every thing in there power to weasel out repairing
an item or its not covered.

People still have to accept shoddy worksmanship but don't
have to be quiet about it.
