UPDATE EMAIL ADDRESS
Hello all,
my wife and I just bought a 2002 toruch Red Thunderbird from the original owners.. Great shape and a great deal. We were driving it around on sunday and got a check engine light. I used a code detector to find the code.. P0303 cylinder three misfire. I removed the coil/plug cover and pulled the #3 coil and there was a lot of oil in the plug hole so i pulled all the other coils and 4 was good and 2 and 1 has some oil in them.. I cleaned the bores, pulled the plugs and wiped down, wiped down and cleaned the coils, reinstalled the plugs and coils and still had a #3 misfire. Today I replaced the coil and plug in #3 with new ones and the motor is good again but feels like it is still misfiring a little. I am thinking that all the coils need to be replaced along with the valve cover gaskets.
Has anyone replaced the valve cover gaskets in the forum and do they make better gaskets now that dont leak in the plug bores?
The coil and plug replacments are pretty easy on the passenger side of the motor so I was wondering if the valve cover gaskets were that big of a deal..
The car is a 2002 purchased in 2003 from a North Texas dealer. It now has 59,825 miles on it and is a wonderful car to drive..
Thanks for your help..

Bob

Hi Bob and Welcome to the forum.
Yes, this does happen...in fact the 2003 thru 2005 are covered by Ford up to 100,000 miles or 10 years for COPS and gaskets. - BUT not the 2002's for some reason.
I do not think that this problem is prevelant in 2002's, but there there have been some reported, such as yourself. You do have to replace the gaskets or you'll keep replacing coils & plugs.
I think its smart to replace the gaskets and all coils/plugs. It does sound, according to other owners, that the new Ford coils are more reliable

Keep us informed on how you do.

Bob:
How did the install go for you? I don't think I am brave enough to do mine when needed - Any guidance?
