So, here's my problem: first the horn would only function intermittently, then stopped working altogether. I took the horn out and tested it, and it is fine. I then started getting the dash indicator light for the airbag function intermittently, then it came on all the time.

Could this be a loosened connection in the steering column?

Marty,

Our 2002 had similar symptoms...steering wheel radio controls and cruise control did not operate properly (never tried the horn) and the air bag warning light was steady on (after blinking a number of times, then steady). Dealer replaced the clockspring, which solved the steering column issues, but additionally, found a poor connection under the drivers seat which was the solution for the air bag warning light. Since you have a horn issue, I would think it more likely the clockspring, but a dealer should be able to do a code test to eliminate possibles. I am using a local Lincoln dealer (where I bought the car) with good results so far.

Good luck, and let us hear what the solution is.

Marty.....
I also had a problem with my 2002 steering column. The Air Bag Light stayed on the radio had off and on problems. As Barry said it is most likely the Clock Spring. I replaced mine and everything went back to normal. I would suggest you find a good mechanic or dealer because when you replace the Clock Spring you are working around the airbag in the steering wheel. Unless all the proper procedures are followed you could deploy it. The Clock Spring is really a spool of the electrical circuits in the steering wheel and it winds up and unwinds as you turn the steering wheel.

Good luck.....

Barry, it turns out that it was the clockspring as you said. And, only half of the horn was working. Both were fixed by the local Ford/Lincoln dealer in about one day, and all is well.

Thanks, Barry & Bill.
