A dealer called today to say they had a
model like we wanted, except no top.
Said would sell a top at dealer cost.

Anyone know what dealer cost would be.

Thought he said $1,200

Going to look at the car tomorrow but
wanted an idea to compare what they
say.

If you buy a car with a top from the factory, it's $2500 more than one without. Therefor, the aftermarket cost from a dealer can NOT be $1200. I think someone posted at one time that the cost was around $5000, but none were available yet.

David That is what I calculated from the
Ford site ($2,500). Will take this along
and say, Ok explain the $1,200.

It's so close to our order coming in that
doubt will work out a deal. Plus taking a
gamble on getting a top and color match.

A word of advice. A friend of mine in the NJ Thunderbird club haad ordered his car back in 2001. He thought he ordered a blue/blue but when it came in last Sept. it was blue with a black top. He decided to keep the black top and order a blue one. The dealer looked it up and gave him a price of around $700. When it came in a month ago, guess what he got. A blue top, and thats all. NO windows, no trim, no headliner, no attachments. JUST A BLUE SHELL. So be careful. If the price is too cheap it may be missing something.

As for color match, that shouldn't be a problem. The tops are not painted at the same time as the cars. As a matter of fact, theyare painted by the top manyfacturer and delivered as complete items to Ford. The tops are just about the only major component that is not made for a specific car and are not serial numbered. When a car is done, they simply take a proper colored top off a rack, put it on the car and then send the car into a second water test. In simple terms, don't worry about color -- it seems to work. It's not like the old days where each color batche was slightly different than the last one.

As far as we know, Ford has not put the complete assembled tops in their parts catalogs, nor have they been priced. If a complete one was needed for replacement because of an accident, an "Expeditor" would likely have to order it directly from the Wixom Assembly Plant for shipment to the dealer. Based on the special crate and handling, we've speculated the price could be as much as $5,000.
(The expeditor may want a copy of the accident report, or pictures, and the VIN to substantiate the need, since tops are in short supply.)
