I have read a little on the common failing of the dash lights on these, and by the sound of some of these posts they make it out to be a major big dealio…
Failing dash lights is not a common problem. When people do have issues with the dash lights & shift indicator lights, it's from a bad FEM. If there is a problem with the dash lights it can be sent off for repair.

I did this LED bulb upgrade today to my 2002 and it worked perfectly, with one caveat. After purchasing the same LED bulbs as shown above, I used the new swivel locks that came with the new bulbs -- including on the seven backlight bulbs which have slightly larger openings in the circuit board. When I powered up the gauges, everything illuminated except the backlight bulbs. The solution was to go back to using the original, larger swivel locks on the background bulbs only, as they make better contact in these larger openings. All lights, including shifter console and radio/AC lights, are dimmable with the upgrade.
Thanks so much for the pictures showing the correct polarity. You saved me a lot of work.
