I'm having an issue with my '55 where it dies as soon as I put the trans into drive or reverse. I recently rebuilt the Holley teapot carb with new gaskets. Didn't do much to the carb other than clean with carb cleaner and install new gaskets. I checked the bowl where the float is and there is fuel in there. I checked the vacuum from the intake during idle and it's at about 18. It does seem to idle faster than before. Hoping for help or guidance and finding a solution. Thanks.

Try adjust air screws on front of carb

Ok. I have them set at about 1.5 turns out right now but I will adjust slowly and see how that affects the idle and operation when in gear...

That worked! I had to set them to about 2.5 turns out to keep the engine from stalling. I'm going to finish up and then take it out for a test run. Thank you!

Hi there

2.5 turns out seems like a lot. Typical setting is more like 3/4 turn out. You may have a vacuum leak.

Try setting the idle mix screws based on maximum manifold vacuum. To do this, start with both screws 3/4 of a turn out. Connect a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum then start the engine and alternate adjusting the screws the same incremental amount until you have the maximum inches of vacuum indicated on the gauge.

You said that you rebuilt the carburetor and since then the idle speed is faster than before. It's possible that after rebuilding the carburetor you have developed a vacuum leak behind the choke plate where the throttle body meets the main body.
