55-57 Gauge cleaning

I'm about to do a through cleaning of the gauges and repainting the needles.
I took some Citrus cleaner to my oil indicator light and it wiped the lettering off. Is denatured alcohol a safe cleaner and what have you found is the best paint for the needles?
