My check engine light came on and I went to Autozone. They said my coolant temp is low. They said it could be the thermostat or the sensor. Any ideas or experience with this?

Friend had a temp gauge that dropped to "bottom." Pulled over and found that bottom radiator hose had popped off and lost nearly all coolant, so no coolant/liquid was touching the sensor = low temp reading.
