Since I bought my 2002 thunderbird a little over a year ago it’s always jumped up to 2000 rpm from a cold start and then settled down to around 1000 before I shift into gear. Last week, I ran over a screw and had to get my tire repaired. Ever since I picked her up from the repair, when I start the car it shows no change in rpm for a few seconds even though I can hear the engine revving, and then it jumps to 1500 before settling down to around 1000. I’ve driven her maybe three times since the repair and it’s happened each time, she’s driving fine though.
I’m a bit paranoid because I love my car so much. Is this indicative of a problem? Has anyone noticed this happening in their car?

My 2003 had a problem with idle on hot restart. Engine idle was a little hi on cold start. No Check Engine light. People kept telling me I needed everything from ignition coils and spark plugs to a fuel pump and a throttle position sensor. But when others had a similar problem, those repairs made no difference.
Anyway, with engine off I removed the Positive Battery lead for about an hour or two. Then I put the lead back on.
The problem was still there but only for a few seconds the first time or two I drove it . From then on the car has been perfect, even shifts better.
I was talking to a fellow owner with a problem closer to yours (not sure what year) and I suggested he do the same thing.
After all, it really dosen't cost anything. And the only thing that I noticed was the car forgot the position of the steering wheel. But I just moved it back to where I liked it and even that has been good. When I saw him again he said his Bird was now running perfect. Maybe it's worth a try. Please let me know one way or the other. If it dosent work I will not share my experience with this issue again. If it does, then feel free to share it.
