1964 Turn Signal Switch advice?

I am going to have to change out the turn signal switch on my 64 Bird. So before I jump into the project I was wondering if anyone in the knowledge base has any experience in changing their turn signal switch?

Either do's or don't s or tips and advice would be appreciated!

If I'm not mistaken, the switch assembly includes the wiring, which has bullet connectors that plug into blocks at the base of the steering column (inside the car). My switch was replaced along with a complete steering column rebuild, mwaning the column was outside the car, sitting on a table. The column has a doughnut, but I believe it's below the point where the wires come out. So -- I don't consider myself an expert on the subject, but I believe the way to go would be to tie a string to the wires as the old switch is pulled out, and tie it to the new wires when reinstalling.

You are right on Gary, I had planned on doing that which should help route them thru the tunnel. I am sure it will be fun !!!! Let you know how it works out on Sunday.

Hey Gary,

Since you have the experience - hope you would share. I am thinking while I have my 1964 tbird down for some rewiring, maybe brakes, and so on - I thought I would tackle this once and for all.
I did replace the shifter, which did help, but good lord it was a pain to get back in for some reason. How hard was it to remove the column, and what parts kit/parts should I replace. My goal is to end up with a rebuilt column.

If any others have advice on removal, best practices, and what parts to grab up for best results that would be great. (Collective minds and all)
 
I'm not the one who removed the column -- a shop did it.

However, if you're into rebuilding this, there is a detent plate, and the shift lever itself, that wear out, causing a tendency to shift out of park into reverse. I've heard of "upgrade" parts that are better built, but not for the 64. Not that I've seen anyway. Then there's the doughnut at the bottom of the column. They simply fall out. Soft plastic; I would think that something better could be made, but haven't seen it.
 
I did replace the lever and it did help - it was a pain to get back in! My wheel slides over with a good bump and I don't feel play in the wheel, it is in the shifter.

would the column have to come out for these parts to be replaced?

I would replace the rag joint..but I understand it can be complex - is this the case - like you have to drill it out and stuff?

Honestly, I think I just need to replace the detent and the bushing and I would be in good shape. My wheel is solid otherwise. So, I would need to pull the wheel to replace this detent plate correct?
