I need to replace the ignition switch on my 63.I put the key in and it wouldn't come out and the ignition is in the on position.Had to shut it off with the coil wire..Do I need to take the cylinder out before I remove the switch. And what is the best way for a novice to remove the switch.I have the shop manual but any suggestions would be helpful

Yes, the cylinder has to come by using the key, most of this era's cars have a small hole next to the key slot...turn the ignition to the far left and with a paper clip in that small hole you should feel a pin with spring pressure when you push in on the paper clip. Keep pushing on that while turning the key farther to the left. Withdraw the cylinder using the key at this point.

That should get the tumbler cylinder out then you can remove the switch body..

As Frankie states, note its a bit of a fiddle though. I've done this a couple of times a few days ago, the first time was hard but once you realise the pin you press in doesn't need a lot of force, the lock can be turned anti-clockwise and pops out. It the Aux position you need when pushing in the pin.
