Some -alts have dioads inside alt they will charge but put light on you may have a week Dioa

The quickest way to test the diodes in an alternator is with an oscilloscope. Before retiring I worked at an automotive dealership for 40 years, during that time I tested and rebuilt many alternators. So I could document the repairs I made, I use to download the alternator waveforms from my oscilloscope.

Attached are some of the waveforms from alternators with open and shorted diodes.
