I need to replace my expansion valve for my AC unit. I've looked high and low but can't find one.... any suggestions on where to look to buy one?

The Scott Drake Automotive Group sells a C5zz - 19849 1964- 1965 A/C expansion valve that has the correct input and output size. The original valve is externally bypassed, you won’t find one sold anywhere . This valve is internally bypassed, but will work, I have one in my 59 tbird. You have to block off the open port. I went to a Sanden rotary compressor and R134 A. The capillary bulb is filled with R134A also. Holley High Preformance makes the valve, so you should be able to find one somewhere but to your specific need of coolant needed I couldn’t say. Enter your online search using the C5zz - 19849 number and go from there.

Thank you both!.....

Now I am struggling with the evaporator box....hard to get to the valve... I too have the compressor for R12 or R134 A. I am switching to R134 A. Off to buy the valve!...

You will have to remove box from firewall anyway. Where the external bypass line fitting attached to evaporator coil you will have to block that port opening. You cannot buy a valve using external bypass. Also the bulb attached to capillary line will have to be properly placed in unit. Box will need cleaning and at the firewall opening there is a paper rectangle coupling that will need to be reshaped or replaced to insure that airflow is correct.

When cleaning the inside of the box, is that asbestos that was originally in there?. Also, after cleaning, what do I need to re-insulate the box with?.... and where would I get the new insulating material?...

Sorry I don’t remember what the cleaning and insulation process involved. I do remember finding a valve, still have the box and manufacturer,as I described in earlier post. You will have to block open port on evaporator coil, locate the capillary bulb where old bulb lived and be sure that the paper coupling from firewall to dash vent is shaped for good transfer of cooled air. I didn’t correct this initially and had an ice cold console because misshaped paper coupling let air escape downwards. Find an A/C guy near you take questions to him if he will hear them. Persevere anything can be done with time ,patience’s, and money.
