windshield split

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem. I came out to my car one day and the windshield had a vertical crack perfectly straight down and narrow as if it were on the seam. It than went off to the right haphazardly. The line starts right at the top of the windshield and in the middle of the windshield. My dealer is claiming that this was caused by a chip right next to the line but if there is any it's incredibly small. Any help would be appreciated.
