Trip Meter A & B Question

I have noticed that my trip meter appears to have limited range to the hundreds as opposed to the single digit thousands.

I wanted to use my B meter for intervals between 3,000 mile service but find it won't serve that purpose. Similarly, I can't take a trip in excess of 1,000 miles without writing it down.

Is my meter defective or did Ford kind of screw this one up? Or, should they fix the problem in future models.
