When I purchased my red 2003 T-bird, I negotiated a later purchase "at dealer cost" a hard top and extended warranty. I was given a signed paper to this effect when I bought the car. I just called the dealer to ask how long it would take to get the top in and try to find out when the newer modified tops would be available. I was in for a rude surprise! I was told that the parts department "refused" to sell at cost but would sell the top at an internal accommodation price of $2,600+ because they “could not stay in business selling parts at cost!”
I was expecting to pay $2,225 as this is the listed dealer cost for the hardtop in car books and on the Internet. Certainly a hefty price considering NADA allows less than $1000 on a trade-in! My question is this: Is there any additional cost to dealers when ordering these tops separately? I need to get an accurate cost figure since I may end up having to take this to small claims court if we cannot come to an amicable agreement.
