Rather than resurrect an old thread, I thought that I’d start a new one.
Some of the members of this forum who’ve been around for a while may remember the odor issue that was discussed last year. Well, I’ve experienced it with my Bird for many months.
I have an early production 2002 Bird (delivered to me in Oct 2001) that’s been driven a little less than 9,000 miles. I took it into the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation and mention the oily odor problem. My Service Rep (Mark Saadi, Bob Baker Ford in San Diego), made a computer inquiry and found that some T-Birds and certain Lincoln LS models have had the problem. The cause is being attributed to the oil filter not being properly tightened. I believe that Mark said the filter need 18 lbs torque.
The Service Manager inspected the car after the oil change, added a colorant to the oil and checked it for leaks. He found none and took a test drive. Long story short, the oily odor has disappeared.
For those of you still experiencing the problem, ensure that the oil filter is torqued properly.
