Mystery Button under hood of 2002

Under the hood of a 2002, on the drivers side, in front of the strut tower, there is a plunger style button. What is this button's function?

This button is similar to the same one on the trunk lid. Dual purpose: it will turn on the dash light "Door Ajar" if hood or trunk are not latched & switch is adjusted properly to do this. AND it will activate the alarm system if the trunk lid or hood are opend while the car is locked up & alarm is set.
