Gear shift knob 1957 removal

Hi all, is the shift knob on the 57 machined on my manual transmission shift handle, i cannot seem to be able to get it off

It just screws on the end of the shift rod. It has probably been on for a very long time.

Like Doug said; it just screws off. i replaced mine and was forced to cut off the plastic portion of the knob and split the metal portion to remove completely.
