Thunderbird Year
2002
Following a "name the car contest" the Thunderbird was officially named, and the car débuted, at the Detroit Auto show in February 1954. The first Thunderbird came off the Dearborn Assembly line October 22, 1954.

Coincidently, earlier this month, production of our new "retro" birds eclipsed production of all the 1955-57 baby birds manufactured.

53,166 1955 through 1957 Birds produced, about 35,000 or 66% are still preserved by enthusiasts.

53,454 2002 through 2004 Birds produced as of last Friday, February 20th.

To put the volumes in perspective, about 9 million vehicles were sold yearly during the mid 50s compared to 16 million or so now.
