2003 PO442 Engine code Small leak in evap system

Yes, I have the same problem and even bought a new gas cap. I smell gas when first starting car. Ford dealership says I need new gas tank and all the connections at estimate $3000. But ford no longer makes these parts. I only have 21,000 miles on this 04 t bird. No h0les in gas tank but they think something must be leaking on top.Need an honest mechanic.

Have you checked the gas cap to see if it's sealing ok? Open the hood and look for any cracked or split vacuum lines.

You can do a smoke test on the car to find the leak.

Take wd40 on a rag and clean where the gas cap seals, then take off the bottom vapor line from the purge valve (push in on the white locking clip and pull off the line) start the car and put you finger over the purge valve where the line was and see if you feel vacuum if you do the purge valve is leaking replace it. Rock auto has them
