My 2003 was recently diagnosed with an oil leak between the block and the sump body. The dealer stated the engine along with the front and rear engine covers need to be removed to perform the repair making it very expensive. Has anyone had experience with this?

Not sure why they told you engine had to be removed you can remove the pan easily and also the oil pump to replace the gasket for both a shop manual is a needed reference it’s about a 2 hour job if you have access to a lift or if you have a drive on ramp quick lift type. This is a common Jag problem I would look to a repair shop that does European car work if something you can’t do yourself. Don’t know the flat rate but 3 hours labor plus parts should be a ball park to estimate the cost

Just to clarify--the leak on mine is apparently between the engine block and the upper sump body assembly and not related to the gasket that sits between the lower oil pan and the sump body assembly. I am thinking your comments may be related to that lower pan gasket, but I could be wrong. Thanks for your comments.

My bad I misunderstood, yes the pan was my first thought. I don’t remember but I believe the bolts are accessible so why not try tightening them you have nothing to lose at this piont

I do not believe engine needs removed for upper sump. I recently saw where someone pulled the upper sump to gain access to the crankshaft/connecting rod bearings (they heard/found a bad bearing). I think it was on a Lincoln LS with the same engine.
