Hi all,

I have a 2002 Ford Thunderbird that won’t shift out of "Park." This happened earlier today, and I’ve read that it might be related to the brake light switch on the brake pedal. In the meantime, is there an emergency release to get the vehicle out of gear so I can move it?

Is there a physical release under a panel, or a procedure to manually disengage the shifter? Any advice on how to resolve this temporarily would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I didn't know that, however does position 2 just release the transmission for towing or is there some way to start and move the car with that method ? Seems the OP wants to move the car under its own power.

How long has the car been setting?

Can't give you a definitive answer since my brake switch works and I can start in Neutral with the brake off. I can definitely get the car out of park though, with the key as shown.

I'm confused as to what the issue is. With car in park, can you start car? Assuming yes, is this when problem happens, that you step on brake to shift into gear and it won't shift? You say you can shift when car is not started? Once started in neutral, are you able to shift and drive? Once started in neutral, can you shift into park? Can you then shift out of park?
