When engine stops, if you can do this at home in your driveway, have air cleaner off before you start inspection. After engine stalls look directly down into
carburetor and press throttle with your hand. You should see 2 jet streams of gasoline that are from the accelerator pump. If no jets of gasoline are observed
carburetor bowls are empty of gasoline. You are now looking for reason no fuel is getting to fuel pump.
To check If you are experiencing an electrical issue, after engine stalls remove a spark plug wire. Insert into the plug cap end an appropriate sized screw driver, don’t destroy the metal insert inside plug cap, hold screw driver by plastic handle. Hold screw driver so that the metal shaft is close to any metal of engine, 20 to 40 thousands, and have someone turn key ignition so that engine cranks. You should hear the snap of the spark, in a day light situation you may not be able to see arc. If no spark, ignition system at fault. Points closed or badly pitted, capacitor shorted,
coil opening internally.
There are many visuals on U tube that explain and demonstrate these checks. You are never too old to learn something new.
