I am re-attaching the exhaust manifolds and there is an additional part that fits between the passenger side exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. It has a butterfly valve within it and appears to operate based on temperature. It makes sense to me, but I am not sure how to orient the part when re-attaching everything. The shop manual is not helpful. Does anyone know of a good visual source?

It should have a small counter weight on it, orientate it so that the weight goes down when open.

I blocked the butterfly exhaust valve to the open position on my 1961 Thunderbird because the butter fly valves tend to seize up and stick in the closed postion. I understand the valve is designed to stay closed while the engine warms up but I do not find any obvious difference with the valve blocked open.
