1960 Wipers only go halfway

Car has been sitting in my garage for the last 5 years has not been running. Just picked up the vehicle from the repair shop had the carb rebuilt and installed a new fuel pump. The windshield wipers now are not functioning properly. When you turn the wipers on they only go half way. Is this a vacuum problem.? does the fuel pump have anything to do with this.?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1960 had a dual diaphragm fuel pump which operated wiper motor. diaphragm dry rots from setting and looses vacumn

On my 60 352 the wipers are connected to the intake vacuum with the power brakes. I no longer have the dual diaphram fuel pump. KENN

Whoa! I'm learning here. Really, gas under pressure being used to operate wiper motors? What could possibly go wrong?

Why not, they love to make it as complex as possible!! So who would think this could even be done let alone want to mix wipers with a fuel pump lol.

T-Bird Jim, looks like it's a matter of tracing the pressure lines from the windshield wiper motors back to the source. Amazingly, there seem to be three potential configurations, 1) to manifold vacuum, 2) to the fuel pump, 3) to the power steering pump.

My '59 (with 430) vacuum windshield wiper motor would do the same so I pulled it and rebuilt it. The rebuild was nothing more than cleaning out old dried grease and re-greasing it with good silicone grease. Works like a champ now .

I have a 59 convertible with a 430 motor as well. Do you have to take the glove box out to get to the wiper motor. I have been under there but it’s been a while. Seems like there’s a lot of cables connecting it to. Any help would be helpful since I need to do the same Thanks. Jim

Yes, the glove box liner needs to come out as well as the passenger side formed duct for the window defroster. It was a pain to restring the wiper drive wires, but I was able to do it right the first time. Pictures taken before you take it apart will be helpful here. We need to get cars inspected annually here in New York and my mechanic is a by the rules guy. He told me one year he would pass the wipers, but if not improved he could not do so again. That prompted me to do the repair. I did not need to replace any parts; just clean and relube. They are really good now. Fast speed is fast and I have full speed adjustment. Good Luck!!

Thanks I’ll make an attempt

I dug around and found the picture I took of my cable drum on the motor. BTW, my dream squarebird is a pink 60 convertible with white interior and 430. If yours looks like that I am officially drooling!

Very, very nice!!

I'm going to sell my '59 because I have not been putting the work it needs into it. I thought that I would devote more time to my cars after retirement but in nine years that has not happenned. I replaced the '59 with a '57 that needs very little work. I also have a 60 but that is one of the golde tops with 430 engine. I will put my squarebird effort into that car.

In my opinion you’re 1960 bird is probably the rarest and one of the nicest restored vehicles on the road today. You would do well to put your efforts there and I understand about the retirement thing. I retired two years ago and I have to stay motivated. Having nine cars helps me do that. Yikes!! Jim
