Seems that the car idles very loud with the noise seemingly emanating from the fan belt area in my 1960 352 V8. Normal?

Use a stethoscope or a long screwdriver and listen to various parts of the engine. Some things that will cause noise in that area are water pump bearing and alternator bearings. You can loosen or disconnect the individual fan belts to confirm diagnosis.

Yes, I often use a wood dowel to figure out where sounds are coming from. Whatever you use, just be careful to keep it clear of the moving parts.
