My '57 has an automatic transmission. I know this transmission is designed to start out in 2nd gear, and only drop into 1st if you goose it. However, when under regular acceleration from a stop, my transmission starts out in 2nd, then acts like it's going to shift into 1st (creating kind of a "hesitation" sensation), and then goes back into 2nd. If I floor it off the line,, or even accelerate more aggressively than normal, it doesn't do this. Any thoughts about what is causing this and/or what I may be able to do to correct this?

As per Doug’s suggestion
Had similar erratic shifting on my 57 ad well.
disconnect linkage and follow directions to the tee and should correct shifting.
Did on mine
