Forgive the heresy, but for a variety of reasons, I'd consider a modern replacement engine and transmission. Not looking for more power, but more reliability and driving range (i.e. a long trip without anxiety). Any knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I know a RetroBird would fill the bill, but I absolutely love the 1957 cars.

Kinda depends on what you want to do. If I was going this far I’d do a 5.0 Coyote and Tremec TKX 5 speed. I’d throw in an upgraded front suspension since you’ll have the motor out. Of course at this point, you need a new rear end to take full advantage of the HP upgrade with disk brakes all the way around. Or if you just want to stick with the engine/transmission, Ford 302 and Tremec T-5. I just inherited a ‘55 and plan on installing the TKX on the original Y-block. The original motors have plenty of power and the one I have was rebuilt so it’s solid. I’m also going to install a Holley Sniper 2 EFI and electronic ignition. So many ways to go with these old beauties!
