1957 Reinstall firewall heat/sound shield driver side

Before I reinstall the driver side firewall padding:
where the emergency brake cable comes through the firewall (see photo) there is a roundish shallow depression approx 5" in diameter. There is a faint outline of what could have been a cover over that depression, with holes around the perimeter of this outline. Screws are still in the outline, but no cover. I can't find any reference or picture of what went here. What is it?
