Recently a leak has developed when I fill the gas tank close to full. I'm uncertain if it is coming from the tank vent tube connection to the filler neck vent tube or from the filler neck insertion to the gas tank. Before the leak 1st occured I had jacked up the passenger rear side of the car. I wonder if this could have caused the filler neck to partially pull away from the tank.

Looking at my filler neck there is a metal flange integrated on the neck and it is about 1-2 inches away from the gas tank insertion point. I'd post a photo but the car is now stored for the winter an hour away.

I'm hoping someone will take a picture of the filler neck to gas tank connection and share it in this post. Seeing one connected that doesn't leak well help me determine where to look for the source of mine.

Thanks.

Thanks Tom. I recall these photos from another of my posts discussing venting of gas tank and gas cap.

What I don't see in your photo is the flange I mentioned on my filler neck. It is metal, about 1-2 inches away from the tank, about 1/2 inch tall, 1/8 inch thick and goes around the filler neck. It's part of the filler neck and not movable.

Do you have a photo of the gas tank showing the filler neck connected on the car?

My filler neck looks just like the photos that are posted. I don't see anything like the flange you're describing that you see on your car. The only thing remotely like a flange on my filler neck is at the upper part of it near where the gas cap goes there's a strap of some sort that looks to be braced to the outside that's used to bolt it to the car sheet metal so that that end is anchored up at the top. If I was to guess and assuming you have the right tank, my guess would be someone used the wrong filler tube and I would wonder if it even has the right end at the bottom so that you can properly fit an o-ring in it - maybe they just put a bunch of sealant down there and maybe that's where the leak is.

If it turns out to be the gas tank vent to filler hose can it be replaced without removing the tank?

There's only one place that uses a rubber hose to connect 2 metal pipes and its accessible without removing the tank. Of course if the vent piping has been pushed/bent enough to bust the brazing where it's connected to the tank at the top you'd have to take the tank out to rebraze it

I had a similar problem, I just bought my 57 but never had more than a half of a tank of gas and no leaks. After a couple of weeks, I filled the tank and left the car in my garage. The next morning I found that several gallons of gas had leaked onto the garage floor. I immediately inspected the tank and found that the leak was dripping from the front of the tank where the 1/4” vent tube comes out of the top of the tank and runs to the fill pipe. I immediately ordered a new tank and after installation, I found that I had the same leak as the old tank. I investigated again and found that the leak was coming from the large “o” ring that seals the fill pipe and was running along the tanks flange around to the front of the tank and dripping below the vent pipe. The “o” ring was not seated in the gas tank’s flange inside the gas tank.
My solution was a new “o”. Please note that it takes a significant amount of pressure to properly seat it. You should be able to feel it seat. I used silicone grease and supported the “o” ring with several wraps of masking tap to keep the ring in position.
I hope this helps!

That sounds exactly like the leak I'm having. How did you get the "o" ring inside the tank? Or does the "o" ring go in the round opening of the tank and gets seated in a groove(the flange you mentioned)?

I removed the fill pipe, I bought two o-rings ( I tore the first one on the first attempt ).I seated the second one on the end of the fill pipe, the is a depression that the o-ring fits in. I then wrapped masking around the fill pipe to support the o-ring from slipping out of position when inserting into the tank. I also used silicone grease to help to it slip in. It took considerable force to insert. There a depression with a small flange inside the tank.
I was able to feel it seat against the flange.
Good luck!
