Also, a battery that will vent to the world outside your trunk. You do not want your own little fireworks show, right in your own trunk!
 
I have an old fashion AMP gauge from the 50's that I would like to connect to GM style w/internal alternator on my 57 bird. Any ideas on how to connect it? The alternator does have a wire for the idiot light. Can I use that wire?

In order for the old style ampere gauge to function correctly it needs to be wired in series with the output of the alternator and the battery. All the current flow goes through the gauge. If the output of the alternator exceeds the capacity of the gauge you risk damaging the gauge if the battery were to he very low and the alternator was charging at capacity. Loose connections on the gauge and all that current under the dash is a recipe for a fire. Voltmeters are a way better way of monitoring your charging system.
