What is the use of the 5 inch circular plate in front of the radiator. It is held together with 3 sheet metal screws. Why is it there?

I would think tha without it the radiator might run a little cooler. Am I right or wrong?

I don't know if you would pick up that much more air.There's also a possibility of picking up stones that could cause a problem.

That li'l access hole is pretty sweet for getting at wiring 'n stuff. Over the years I've been thankful it's there!
