Where would I look on the block for casting marks and numbers to help me know if this is a numbers matching car?

There is a casting # that will help you, also a 3-4 digit casting # under the portion of the head that you ca see. A lite and a small mirrow will give the letters. The vin number may tell what motor it was born with.

There is no such thing as "numbers matching" for these cars the way there is for some of the other later cars. You can verify if it's the right part number and see if the manufacturing dates line up with the build date but that's a close as you can get to any verification.

You are absolutely right there is no SERIAL #. I said the casting # will help with Identification. That number is on the block near the oil pump or by the starter. The head number is in the very front of the engine right where the head and intake meet. The casting should be ECZ-G INDICATING A 312 ENG. 245 hp.

First of all, there is not a quick external check. The block casting number, over the oil filter and below the block headline is a semi decent method.

If the casting number starts with ECK, it is not a 312. If the casting number starts with EDB, it is probably a 292 with a very small chance of it being a 312.
  • If there are not three capital letters before the casting number, it is not a 312 and is probably a later 292 block.
  • If the casting number starts with ECZ, there is an 80% chance that it is a 312.
The only way to tell for sure is to take the heads off and measure the bore and stroke, or take the flywheel cover off and try to get a look at the back of the crankshaft.

When looking at the crankshaft, look for a semi-circle cutout in the crankshaft flange at the flywheel. Then, turn the engine over 180 degrees. If it is a 312, there is a recessed area on the flange with a raised circle in the center. If there is nothing there, or something else, it is not a 312.
