On the left, the one I took out. On the right, the one that I was told is specified as OEM.
Checked engine casting numbers to make sure the engine is original 292.

New one works, however, apparently a bolt on the flywheel hits something once every flywheel revolution.
Question: correct starter even though it looks different? Shims needed? Thoughts...?

See below. I saved it from FB but If my reading of it is right, your old starter is the right one for a 55. The new one, the one on the right in your photo, would be for a 57. Not sure which is right for a 56. In the photo comment there is mention of 6 volt starter which is what a 55 would have originally been.

The starter you took out (the one on the left) is a 6-volt OEM starter. The Bendix on the starter on the right is retracted. Before you can use the starter on the right you will have to extend the Bendix. This is how I extend the Bendix.
