1955 Ford-O-Matic shifts hard to third and to second if I put her in first. Had tranny serviced, no difference. Is this normal for the Ford-O-Matic to shift hard even under slow acceleration?

thanks

No, it is not normal for the Ford-O-Matic transmission to shift hard. The engine communicates its load requirements to the transmission through the throttle control rod. Proper adjustment of both the throttle linkage and the control rod linkage are critical to transmission operation.

Attached is the procedure for performing the throttle linkage and throttle control rod linkage adjustments.

Doug, what if you shift manually under a light acceleration from 2nd to 3rd and it shifts hard, will this adjustment fix that?

I can't say for sure if the throttle linkage and throttle control rod linkage adjustment will correct your hard shifting concern, but I would make sure the basic adjustments are correct before I went any deeper into the transmission.
