transmission wont shift correctly

I bought a 63 Tbird six months ago and have only driven it about 3 times.The first drive was fine until I got near home and the car began to surge and back fire a little under accelleration. Took it to mechanic and he replaced the worn out carburettor with a fully refurbished Holley carb.The 2nd drive was fine until after 30 minutes of driving I noticed the transmission would not change up to top gear. if I backed off the accelerator it would up shift for a second or so then back to second. I took it back to my mechanic and he lubricated the kick down rod. Made it home no problem. 4 weeks later[ yesterday] I took her out for a drive and the same thing again after about 30 minutes of driving, will not upshift to top gear . Managed to coast home slowly in second gear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My mechanic did lubricate kick down rod for free and did say to me if I have further trouble to maybe take the vehicle to a carburettor specialist. I am terrible at most things mechanical so I rely on good mechanics and good advice, thankyou for any help.

Does your tranny have a vacuum modulator? If so it could be a problem. I had that happen on my 65 and later on after a tranny rebuild and found it was my carb linkage sticking. I would check with a tranny guy too. One that has experiences with these trannys. Also try the vintage tbird forum. Good luck

thanks guys for your help.Transmission guys had a look and found the linkage was sticky. they repaired the valve body
and cleaned the governor and modulator. all good now although the pedal now feels much firmer than before.

thanks for the advice. I did take it to transmission specialist and it would appear he has fixed the shifting problem, unfortunately now my pedal is Rock hard. On the drive home I found it was hard to push down on pedal when prior to this the pedal was relatively soft. The engine now lacks response, ie: Push hard on accelerator and the normal response is now slow. I called mechanic and he has offered no real solution. I have a feeling they may have bent the linkage.Sorry for the slow reply, but I have been away working remotely, appreciate your comments and help.

Either they did something to the linkage, or installed a stiffer spring on the carburetor. Check the spring on the side of carburetor.
